Karen Gillan is sharpening her sword skills. The Scottish actress has officially joined the cast of Highlander, Amazon MGM’s upcoming remake of the 1980s cult fantasy classic.

Karen Gillan will star as Heather, the mortal wife and true love of Connor MacLeod, who will be portrayed by Henry Cavill. The role adds another major franchise to Gillan’s growing résumé, placing her alongside Cavill, Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Marisa Abela in the highly anticipated reboot.

Directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick), the action-fantasy epic is being developed under Amazon MGM’s United Artists banner, with a theatrical release planned. Principal photography is scheduled to begin at the end of September.

The project reimagines the beloved 1986 film, which starred Christopher Lambert as MacLeod and Sean Connery as his mentor, Ramirez. The original became a pop culture touchstone, remembered for its sweeping sword fights, Queen’s iconic soundtrack, and the immortal line: “There can be only one.”

In the remake, Cavill will take on Lambert’s role as the immortal Highlander, while Crowe steps into Connery’s shoes as Ramirez, the swordsman who guides him through his journey. Bautista has been cast as The Kurgen, the brutal warrior and primary antagonist, and Abela, best known for HBO’s Industry, will also play a significant role.

Karen Gillan’s casting as Heather carries particular weight, as the character represents the emotional heart of the story a mortal love caught in the shadow of immortality.

The script for the reboot was penned by Michael Finch (John Wick: Chapter 4). Producers include Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt for United Artists, Neal H. Moritz, Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner.

For Karen Gillan, the role in Highlander could mark the beginning of her third major franchise run. She is already a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula, the cybernetic warrior who has appeared in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and multiple Avengers films. She also co-starred alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black in Sony’s blockbuster Jumanji franchise, with a third installment in development.

Outside of her franchise work, Gillan recently appeared in The Life of Chuck, Neon’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novella. The film, directed by Mike Flanagan, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the prestigious People’s Choice Award.

Karen Gillan is represented by UTA, Maison Two, Linden Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen.

With Stahelski’s flair for stylized action and a powerhouse cast that blends Hollywood heavyweights with fan-favorite stars, the new Highlander is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fantasy reboots in recent years. Fans of the original will be eager to see how this modern version reinvents the tale of immortals, destiny, and the eternal struggle where true to legend there can be only one.
