Cate Blanchett is set to bring her unmistakable artistry to the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a groundbreaking performance that blends classical tradition with bold reinvention. The two-time Oscar-winning actress will narrate four performances of Beethoven’s Egmont under the baton of L.A. Phil music and artistic director Gustavo Dudamel at Walt Disney Concert Hall from Feb. 12–15, 2026.

Billed as a “bold reimagining,” this staging of Egmont casts Cate Blanchett in the traditionally male role of the narrator. The idea for the gender swap comes from acclaimed playwright Jeremy O. Harris, best known for his Tony-nominated Slave Play. The project will also feature soprano Elena Villalón, weaving together themes of resistance, freedom and heroism concepts that feel as urgent today as they did in Beethoven’s time.

The program will begin with the world premiere of Humboldt’s Nature, a new piece by Ricardo Lorenz inspired by the South American expeditions of philosopher and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, a contemporary of Beethoven. Pianist Yunchan Lim will also perform Schumann’s celebrated Piano Concerto, rounding out what promises to be a landmark series of concerts for the orchestra.

Cate Blanchett’s involvement marks another instance in which she has taken on roles that defy expectation. In Warwick Thornton’s The New Boy (2023), she played a nun in a role originally written for a male priest, while in Todd Field’s Tár (2022), her portrayal of fictional conductor Lydia Tár sparked widespread discussion about power, gender, and artistry. Earlier in her career, she famously embodied Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There (2007). Blanchett is also expected at this year’s Venice Film Festival to support Jim Jarmusch’s latest film Father Mother Sister Brother.

For Harris, the collaboration adds to an already formidable résumé. In addition to Slave Play, he penned Daddy (which opened at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2022), co-wrote A24’s Zola with director Janicza Bravo, and contributed to HBO’s Euphoria and Irma Vep. He currently serves as artistic director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where his most recent work, Spirit of the People, premiered this summer. Harris will also appear on screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in Pete Ohs’ Erupica, opposite Charli XCX.

The announcement of Cate Blanchett’s L.A. Phil engagement coincided with other major news for the actress. On the same day, Japanese retail giant Uniqlo revealed Blanchett as its newest global brand ambassador. Under the partnership, she will work to promote Uniqlo’s LifeWear philosophy, which emphasizes excellence, social responsibility, and humanitarian engagement.

“Ms. Cate Blanchett is among the greatest actors of her generation on stage and on screen,” said Tadashi Yanai, Uniqlo’s founder and chairman. “But our admiration goes beyond entertainment. Her passion and engagement is evident in her contributions as a role model for women, her mentorship of emerging artists, and her longstanding commitment to humanitarian and environmental causes.”

Cate Blanchett, for her part, praised Uniqlo’s global creative director Clare Waight Keller, with whom she has a long-standing creative relationship, as well as fellow ambassador Roger Federer. “I am energized by the opportunity to help Uniqlo advance important aspects of its LifeWear philosophy supporting the next generation, combatting the global displacement crisis, giving back to communities, and finding meaningful ways to contribute to a more equitable world,” she said in a statement.

With Cate Blanchett simultaneously taking on an iconic classical work in Los Angeles and stepping into a new global ambassador role, 2026 is already shaping up to be another landmark chapter in her multifaceted career.
