The railway company European Sleeper wants to launch a direct night train linking Brussels and Amsterdam with Copenhagen and Malmo. It would extend a network that has grown steadily since the company was founded, and deepen the continent’s revival of overnight rail travel.
European Sleeper, established as a cooperative in 2021, has set up several night train connections across Europe in recent years, building a reputation for reconnecting major cities by sleeper service. The new line to Malmo is planned to begin in April 2028, in collaboration with the German company RDC, according to news agencies in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The proposed schedule points to an overnight journey designed for convenience. While the timetable has not been finalized, the company’s ambition is for departures from Brussels and Malmo three times a week at 7 p.m., with arrival at the final destination at 10 a.m. the following day, as it outlines on its website.
The plan taps into a broader shift in European travel, as passengers increasingly weigh the climate cost of short-haul flights and rail operators respond with more comfortable overnight options. A single-night hop between the Low Countries and southern Scandinavia fits neatly into that trend.
Much still has to fall into place before the first departure, from finalized timetables to rolling stock and cross-border coordination. But the announcement signals continued momentum for the sleeper-train comeback, and if the 2028 target holds, it would give travelers a direct, low-carbon overnight link between two of northern Europe’s key regions.
