John Boyega has been quietly married for almost two years, and he and his wife are now expecting their first child together. The 34-year-old actor, best known as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, disclosed both pieces of news in an interview with The Guardian, conducted to promote his new documentary.
The film, Damilola: The Untold Story, is a BBC production that Boyega worked on closely. It returns to one of the darkest moments of his childhood: when he was ten years old, a school friend of his was killed by two teenagers. In the interview he spoke about what it was like to go back over those events, what he took from that period of his life, and what he would do differently now that he is about to become a parent himself.
The marriage came up almost in passing. Asked about the jewellery he was wearing, Boyega explained that it was his wedding ring and that he had been married for nearly two years. He said little about his wife, but described the ceremony as a small affair that had something of Braveheart about it. A large celebration in the Nigerian tradition has not yet taken place, and he said he would like to hold one, joking that when it happens the couple will have to bring Nigeria to a standstill.
For now, the family’s attention is on the birth. His partner already has a son from a previous relationship, and the couple are expecting another boy. Boyega described his life as completely fulfilled when it comes to family and said the timing had been perfect. He also set out a simple aim for fatherhood, saying he wants to be present, consistent and full of love.
The news comes alongside one of the most personal projects of Boyega’s career so far: a documentary that asks him to revisit the loss of a friend at the same time as he prepares to raise a son of his own.
