The Prince and Princess of Wales posted a new photograph of their eldest, then followed it with unseen footage from a trip away.

Prince George has hit thirteen. The eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, July 22, and his parents marked the day publicly with a new official portrait and, later, a video montage nobody had seen before.

The new portrait

Thirteen years have now passed since William and Kate became parents for the first time. They opened the day with a new official photograph of their son on their Instagram account, George in a classic suit, the caption kept short: “Happy 13th Birthday, George!” The comments filled up quickly with birthday messages.

Footage from a trip by the water

Later the same day, the couple went back to Instagram with more. The previously unseen montage they posted was filmed during a stay by the water, and it is a long way from a formal portrait.

George appears on a boat, on a beach with a dog, scrambling up a rocky cliff, taking in the view, and playing in the sand. Loose, unposed footage of a boy on holiday, and royal watchers online were quick to seize on it.
