“All military activity in Gaza must cease, including kite flying. We have conveyed this message through established channels,” a person within the peace council said, according to the AFP news agency and the Times of Israel. The reference to kites points to a tactic Hamas has used before, sending incendiary devices across the border.
The warning followed an Israeli threat over the weekend to respond with force if Hamas, which it labels a terrorist group, resumed the firebomb-kite attacks. In an effort to hold the fragile truce together, the council paired that message with a caution to Israel itself.
“Israel must also abide by the ceasefire; military actions cannot be carried out except in response to real and immediate threats,” the same source said, underscoring an attempt to constrain both sides rather than pressure only one. The even-handed framing reflects how delicate the current pause remains.
For its part, the Israeli side signaled that it would not lower its guard. “We will not allow our enemies along the borders, and especially towards Gaza and Lebanon, to be strengthened. We will take every opportunity to repel threats when they arise,” said Eyal Zamir. Taken together, the statements capture a ceasefire being managed message by message, with each party warned against the actions most likely to unravel it.
