The summer blockbusters are barely done and the autumn schedule is already looking loaded. From Hollywood tentpoles to a strong Nordic contingent, the coming months bring a run of premieres worth marking in the diary, and a few of them have been a very long time coming.
Two big franchise moments anchor the season. Dune: Part Three arrives on December 16, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya back and Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson and Anya Taylor-Joy joining Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation, this time drawing on Dune Messiah. Before that, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping lands on November 20, a prequel following a young Haymitch Abernathy that features Swedish actor Edvin Ryding and promises one of the bloodiest Games yet.
There is nostalgia on the calendar too. Practical Magic 2 opens on September 11, reuniting Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, now joined by Joey King and Maisie Williams as the next generation of witches — a sequel fans of the 1998 cult favourite had almost given up hope of seeing.
The Nordic titles round things out. Arkipelag (October 9) is a psychodrama about three fathers on a school trip, with Fares Fares, Gustaf Skarsgård and Linus Wahlgren; Jävla karlar (November 6), adapted from Andrew Walden’s prize-winning novel, stars Aliette Opheim and Filip Berg; and Josephine Bornebusch writes, directs and stars in The Storm, a stranded-in-a-storm thriller heading to Netflix later in the year. Between the spectacle and the smaller dramas, it is shaping up to be a full season at the cinema.
